The Kelly debate team competed in its first tournament of the year October 20-21 at Klein HS in Houston, starting the year off with a bang. In individual events, Seniors John Oliverio and Christine Phan advanced in US Extemporaneous Speaking. Freshman Cecily Shields went all the way to the finals to place 6th in Impromptu Speaking.
In debate, John Oliverio barely missed the cutoff for elimination rounds in Championship Lincoln-Douglas debate. In the Novice Lincoln-Douglas division, Freshmen Ayan Lalani and Cecily Shields advanced to elimination rounds. Cecily went four more rounds of eliminations to place 1st in the event! Cecily also earned the 2nd place speaker award.
The Kelly debaters attended the Clear Brook HS Debate Tournament Nov 10-11, 2017. In individual events, Christine Phan advanced in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. Cecily Shield advanced in Novice
Extemporaneous Speaking. Cecily also advanced in Impromptu, going all the way through finals to place 6th overall.
In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Samantha Echegaray just missed the cut to break to quarterfinals in the Championship division. Cecily Shield did advance in the Novice division, placing 5th in the event.
Two students also placed fourth in speaker ranks — Cecily in Novice and Parsa Safa in the Chamionship division.
