Step 1: Determine Scholarship Type
Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School offers opportunities to establish endowed, annually funded or memorial scholarships. The type of scholarship established should be based on a donor’s intent in establishing the scholarship and preferred method of funding the scholarship donation.
Step 2: Establish Scholarship Criteria
As a scholarship donor, you choose the name of the scholarship as well as the recipient selection criteria. The MKCHS Advancement staff is available to help you create the criteria for your scholarship. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students based upon area of interest, leadership potential, merit, academic achievement, financial need and/or other criteria. TAPPS regulations prohibit providing a financial “incentive” to athletes, so selection criteria cannot be solely athletic in nature. However selection criteria may include an athletic component along with an existing financial need.
Step 3: Administration of Scholarship Funds
Annually a selection committee made up of MKCHS faculty and administrators reviews the qualifications of all eligible students and selects the most deserving recipient(s) based on the donor-established criteria.
Major scholarship contributors are notified annually when their scholarship recipient(s) have been selected and are informed of the recipient name(s). Donors are then invited to present their scholarship(s) at the Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School awards ceremony, held on campus each spring.
Our scholarship recipients often write a thank-you note to the donors, and in some cases the recipient and donor are able to meet.
Tax Benefits of Funding a Scholarship
A donation to fund a scholarship at Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School will allow you to receive immediate tax benefits in the year you make the gift to the Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School Foundation or, in the case of an annually funded scholarship, to Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School. In order to receive a tax benefit, donors may not direct who is to receive the scholarship(s) nor participate in the recipient selection process.
