The debate team had one of its most successful overall showings at the Dulles High School speech and debate tournament November 11-12, bringing home several trophies.
In individual events:
Competing in semifinals in Extemporaneous Speaking, Alex Tran was in the Novice division and Parsa Safa in the championship division. Parsa advanced to the final round where he placed 6th, receiving a point toward Texas Forensic Association state qualification.
Four Kelly debaters advanced in Impromptu Speaking: Josef Kalathra, Sony Tran, Parsa Safa, and Colin Cormier. Parsa and Colin continued to the final round where Parsa placed 6th and Colin took top honors – 1st – in the event!
Josef Kalathra also competed through to the final round in Original Oratory, placing 3rd overall and earning three state qualifying points.
In Lincoln-Douglas debate:
Our novice debaters were led by Parrish Pierre, who missed the cut to elimination rounds by just a few speaker points.
In the championship division, three debaters advanced to elimination rounds, with Elijah Keal just missing the break by one rank. Colin Cormier (who was the top seed after four preliminary rounds) placed 9th, Sony Tran, tied for 5th place, and Christine Phan tied for 3rd place. They received 2, 3, and 6 state qualifying points, respectively.
Lincoln-Douglas debate also has individual speaker awards. Kelly earned two of them in championship LD! Josef Kalathra received 3rd place honors and Colin Cormier was the #1 speaker in the tournament.
